Seu pai lhe prometeu uma carreira superior, mas não pôde cumprir.
Aos 9 anos foi encaminhado ao tio, tenente Francisco Dias Pereira, irmão de Flausina, comerciante e líder conservador em Vargem Grande. Com o tio, Francisco aprendeu o gosto pelo comércio e pela política.
Foi ele quem comprou terras na região de Ipaussú, junto com Silvestre Ferraz Egreja, cuja família por lá cresceu. Amando, filho de Francisco, teria ido para lá cuidar da fazenda.
Gostava de olhar o céu, teve um telescópio que hoje está com sua bisneta Maria Helena Gomes Lisboa.
Contam que Isabel, sua mulher, morreu "perturbada". A família diz "também, depois de 25 partos!"<p>.
